En tant qu’analyste chevronné possédant plus de deux décennies d’expérience dans la finance et l’économie mondiales, j’ai été témoin du flux et du reflux des devises et des systèmes financiers à travers le monde. L’annonce récente de la Nouvelle Banque de Développement (NDB) d’étendre l’utilisation des monnaies locales constitue en effet une étape importante vers la dédollarisation, et il est fascinant de voir ce mouvement prendre de l’ampleur parmi les pays des BRICS.

Il y a peu de temps, 120 pays du monde entier ont participé au Forum municipal international des pays BRICS. Suite à cet événement, la Nouvelle Banque de Développement a tenu sa 9ème Assemblée Annuelle. Les gros titres d’aujourd’hui font le buzz à propos de cet événement après que la présidente de la NDB, Dilma Rousseff, a déclaré que la banque faisait des progrès pour accroître l’utilisation des monnaies locales, ce qui peut être interprété comme un effort pour réduire la dépendance à l’égard du dollar américain – un processus souvent appelé de -dollarisation.

Il est important de noter que la majorité de la population mondiale n’a pas encore abandonné le dollar américain. Comme l’indique le Dollar Dominance Monitor de l’Atlantic Council, le dollar américain représente environ 58 % de toutes les réserves de change mondiales et contrôle également environ 88 % de toutes les transactions internationales en devises.

Bitcoin pourrait-il être la réponse aux efforts de dédollarisation des pays BRICS ?

De mon point de vue de chercheur, il est clair que la dédollarisation n’est pas une chose à laquelle on peut s’attendre dans un avenir proche ou même à moyen terme. Cependant, il est important de reconnaître les progrès significatifs réalisés par la Chine vers la dédollarisation de sa propre économie au fil du temps.

Au contraire, il est fort possible que cette tendance se poursuive sur une période plus longue. Cela est particulièrement vrai étant donné que la part du dollar américain dans toutes les réserves de change mondiales a considérablement diminué au cours des huit dernières années seulement, passant de 65,3 % à 58,8 %. En outre, de nombreux pays, notamment ceux liés aux BRICS, ont acquis de l’or alors même que les prix grimpaient.

La réputation de l’or en tant que valeur refuge et moyen de stockage de valeur s’est considérablement accrue depuis 2019, en particulier à la suite de l’épidémie de COVID-19. Ce regain d’intérêt s’est également étendu à d’autres actifs partageant des caractéristiques similaires, comme l’or. Récemment, le Bitcoin et les crypto-monnaies sont devenus une autre classe d’actifs dotée de telles propriétés.

Bitcoin à la rescousse ?

Par exemple, des pays comme la Russie et l’Iran ont commencé à utiliser le Bitcoin et le minage de Bitcoin comme méthode pour atténuer l’impact des sanctions internationales auxquelles ils sont confrontés. La Russie expérimente notamment actuellement des plateformes d’échange de cryptomonnaies pour déterminer comment ces transactions numériques peuvent être facilitées au-delà des frontières.

Tout comme les entités individuelles, les BRICS ont manifesté leur intérêt pour l’introduction d’une monnaie numérique adossée à l’or, à la suite de discussions antérieures sur la création d’une « monnaie BRICS ».

Au-delà de ces passions, de nombreux pays expriment un vif intérêt à imiter le Salvador en amassant Bitcoin comme actif de réserve national. En 2021, le président Bukele a proposé cette décision dans le but de dissocier l’économie du dollar américain, malgré les critiques d’institutions comme la Banque mondiale et le FMI concernant cette décision.

2024 présente un nouveau paysage, avec des entités de premier plan telles que MicroStrategy et Metaplanet se lançant dans les crypto-monnaies. De plus, les fonds négociés en bourse (ETF) Bitcoin et Ethereum ont attiré une attention considérable à Wall Street, ce qui indique un intérêt institutionnel croissant pour cette classe d’actifs.

Collectivement, ces avancées signalent une montée en puissance potentielle des crypto-monnaies dans un avenir proche. Si les pays BRICS parviennent à se dissocier du dollar américain et à détourner seulement une petite partie des liquidités actuelles en dollars américains vers les crypto-monnaies, le paysage du marché pourrait être radicalement modifié.
